In case no one had noticed, apple picking season is at its peak and
what a weekend weather-wise to bring out the crowds, droves, herds of
apple pickers. And with the Collings Foundation’s Battle of the Airfield
going on as well, let’s just say that Stow had more than its fair share
of visitors as evidenced in the police log this week.
To go with the apple season, Nancy takes a look at some of the
antique apple varieties still available in Stow orchards, a story idea
from one of our readers.
A few weeks ago, we made reservations
for this weekend to take our last camping trip of the season to Crawford
Notch near the base of Mt. Washington. We were duly prepared to freeze
our behonkuses off, especially at night. Little did we know we’d end up
in shorts and t-shirts during the day and had the most incredible views
from the highest point in the Northeast atop Mt. Washington via the Cog
Railway. Although we had to anchor Tim’s mother lest she become airborne
in the 60-70 mph wind gusts, it was a phenomenal experience overall. I
even got to see a copy of the “Among the Clouds” newspaper that had been
produced and printed at the top of the mountain from 1885-1917, ceasing
operation after their offices burnt in a summit fire (see the Clause
online for a photo of it). And I remembered to bring our newspaper, so
the photo is in line for the back page.
We are starting a new FOTSI campaign as seen below. We know there
are a lot more than 200 people that appreciate the paper and we hope we
can count on your support as we approach the slower winter months. Thank
you!
